Planning
Inspiration
The two inspirations that I used for this piece where "Vicki! I-I Thought I Heard Your Voice" by Roy Lichtenstein and "The Little Green Monster" a short story by Haruki Murukami.
Roy Lichtenstein's pop art style was a direct influence of popular culture (hence the name), he looked at comic book art, American prosperity, consumption and consumerism. He utilized many techniques from comic strips like Ben Day dots, flat fields, patterns and black outlines. His style turned commercial printing, advertising and comics into fine art.
"The Little Green Monster" is a short story inside Haruki Murukami's "The Elephant Vanishes" which my DP Literature class had to read. This story was my favorite from all the other short stories we had to read, in the story a little green monster is sprouted from a tree and proclaims his love for this woman by intruding upon her home. She obviously does not share these feelings and eventually defeats the monster.

Planning Sketches
This was my first planning sketch, I did not really know how I wanted the little green monster to look, but I did know that I wanted to have the tree from which he sprouted in the background. I also knew that I wanted to have the woman in one of the corners just like in my inspiration from Lichtenstein.
|
The second sketch I had read over the story and adapted more of the characteristics that were said for the little green monster. Some of them include the scales and the elongated and pointed nose. I had also added a speech bubble to draw my inspiration from Lichtenstein further.
|
My third and last planning sketch was the most detailed and I had finalized most of the thoughts and characteristics. I added a bit more detail to the woman and made the green monster more spiky while also adding a hole under the tree to depict where the monster had come out of.

Process
Process
1.) My first step was to transfer my final sketch onto the linoleum print, due to my print being so big I had to sketch it onto the linoleum directly.
2.) Then i started to carve out parts of my print using various carving tools, according to the sketch. 3.)Then I went on to transfer my print, I started by laying green water based ink onto the linoleum but only the little green monster as he is the only part of my print which will not be black. I rolled out an even coat of ink onto the section of the print with the monster. 4.) Then went on to lay a coat of black water based ink on the rest of the linoleum. 5.) After I grabbed a piece of paper and set it on top of my print and with a baren I smoothed out the paper, and put pressure onto it in order to transfer my design. I started by applying pressure in the middle and working my way outwards 6.) Lastly I removed the paper from the print, and was left with a copy of my design |
Experimentation
For my experimentation I decided to use different amounts of pressure with the bamboo baron and my hands for each of the prints that I did. For the first print that I did I applied the least amount of pressure and only used the baron, this resulted in a faded and pretty dull print. For the second print I added a lot more pressure with the baron and again did not use a baron, resulting in a darker print but it was still pretty light. For my third print I applied a lot of pressure with the baron but also used the palms of my hand, which resulted in the best print with a lot of detail and color showing through. For my last print I only used my hands to smooth it out, this resulted in a very messy print which was the worst one I had produced.

Reflection
Critique
Overall, I am satisfied with the way that my block print came out. I wish that I would have been paying attention while carving out the speech bubble better because the Y appears to be backwards. I carved all the letters out backwards so that when I transferred my print the phrase would come out facing the correct way but I failed to notice the Y was facing the other way until after I carved it out. I do like the way that the woman looks and the expression on her face as it does closely resemble my inspiration from Lichtenstein but I do not like her mouth and below her nose because it all looks crowded and not very proportional, that whole area of her face just looks like its shifted the wrong way. Another aspect of my piece that I also enjoy is the way that the little green monster came out, I think its an accurate depiction of what I read and captured most of the characteristics that were stated in the story. The only thing that I would change for the monster would be to have a lighter green for his body. The black and the green are in a similar shade range so they appear to be the same color, I would just like to add a more apparent contrast between the monster and the rest of the print.

ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
In Lichtenstein's "Vicki! I-I Thought I Heard Your Voice" the woman appears to have a disgusted and uninterested facial expression which I tried to imitate in my piece and in "The Little Green Monster" a clear and obvious depiction is given in the story which I tried to closely follow.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Roy Lichtenstein often depicts women in vulnerable situations and makes them out to be the victim, but in the Little Green Monster the woman saves herself.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Pop art is directly derived from popular culture and has many themes of American Prosperity and alongside Andy Warhol Roy Lichtenstein is a poster boy for the pop art movement.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research is male entitlement and how men believe that women have an obligation of loving them back.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that Murakami enjoys writing and portraying women as strong characters, as in many of his stories the women at first glance appear to be conventional and traditional but turn out to be bold and assertive.
