“Strong, Sprout and Submissive” is a tryptic embodying who I am, how situations affect me and how I affect situations. This piece is the first piece in my gallery and it depicts the concept of my exhibition as a whole, it takes you through a journey of growth and finding a sense of self identity. Depicting in the first panel a head strong resilient person, in the last panel a weak and submissive person and in the middle panel growth from situations given to someone. This piece was inspired by Pruett Carters’ “Security” illustration and from Tarsila Do Amaral’s "Brazilian Religion".
"Sorry, but me first", is a block imitating the sixth Major Arcana in a traditional tarot card deck (The Lovers), it is the second piece in my gallery. "Sorry, but me first" is also inspired by "Blue Nude" by Henri Matisse. The print is showcased with its reverse meaning symbolizing growth, learning how to put you and your own needs before those of others.
"Blooming" is a dry-point print showcasing a woman with flowers sprouting from her hair in a cubist style. Inspiration for this piece came from Picasso’s “Weeping Woman” and Kali Uchis’ music video for “After the Storm”. This piece is about overcoming heartbreak and growing from it, despite feeling lost.
"The Two Danielas" is a diptych illustration depicting two different versions of myself. Inspiration for this piece includes 1950’s American Fashion, as well as Traditional Tabasco Dresses from Mexico, and lastly Frida Kahlo’s “The Two Fridas”. This illustration represents the push and pull of growing up in two vastly different cultures and the identity that the clash of cultures have created.
"Cherry Cake", is a found object sculpture, made out of wire paper Mache and other craft supplies. It is inspired by Rommy DeBommy an designer who makes hyper realistic food purses out of Styrofoam; it is also inspired by Mickalene Thomas and her exhibition "I was born to do great things". It is intended to represent the act of learning how to do things for yourself and for your own happiness despite how cliche it may feel.
This Psychedelic tour poster was inspired from the 60's psychedelic movement and the use of psychedelic posters in the music industry; it is also inspired by the band TV Girl and their single "Natalie Wood". For this piece I wanted to depict freedom to finally being able to express your authentic self after a series of events and circumstances force you to reevaluate your values, morals and beliefs. I wanted to embody the feeling of relief, acceptance and freedom of expression through the female figure and the hues in the piece, This piece also is the conclusion and wraps up my gallery.
This recycling unit is a solution to the problem that one is faced with while being at coffee shops and not knowing where your cup is supposed to be thrown away. Coffee shops usually have one recycling unit that when first looked at can be very confusing and the one that I have created solves this problem. I was inspired by the industrial designer Lawrence Murphy for this project.
"I love you" is a block print examining the boundaries between love and disgust, It is inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's "Vicki" and by the short story "The Little Green Monster" written by Haruki Murukami. The print also explores and depicts bad relationships and how they can break you but the growth causes you to help you find yourself.
"Search Engine", is a mixed media piece inspired by Mickalene Thomas's painting and editorial editing style. An additional inspiration and name come from Haruki Murakami’s short story "Search Engine". I wanted this piece to be a representation of self-identity and how one is influenced a product of the culture they are raised in.
“Pure Heroine”, is a photograph series composed of 6 images, inspired by Edouard Manet's painting style and the way in which he depicts everyday life and its beauty Additionally Lorde’s first studio album “Pure Heroine” serves as a second inspiration. The albums theme of built up teen angst and her lyrical depiction of being a teenager in the 21st century, help me be able to depict being a teenager and how such a small amount of time in your life can be so pivotal.
