Psychedelic Tour Poster

Planning
Inspiration
The two inspirations that I had for this piece where psychedelic posters from the 60's that were prevalent in the music industry, as well as the single "Natalie Wood" by one of my favorite bands TV Girl.
The 60's psychedelic movement "refers to drugs and other substances that were popular among the the youth culture of the time" (LOBO, 2018). Some key visual aspects of the psychedelic style includes bright intense color combinations, illegible hand writing, and curvaceous and interesting shapes. Victor Moscoso was amidst the main artists of the psychedelic art movement, he was a professional graphic designer and took much inspiration from rock posters, advertisements and comic books.
TV Girl is an Indie Rock/Pop band from San Diego California. The album which I chose to base this project around is "Natalie Wood" which was released in June of 2015. This single is an homage to the late Natalie Wood who was a famous actress in her youth around the 50's and later became an acclaimed actress in the 60s; she was tragically and mysteriously found dead.
The single discusses how women are forced to grow old at a young age in order to succeed in life (or in the acting business as discussed in the song), and they then on are seen as objects and nothing more. TV Girl is a Band I found August of 2018 and fell for immediately, it has been pivotal in my pubescent years.

Planning Sketches
This was my first planning sketch, I had included the title of the album and also tried to squeeze in the tour aswell as the woman figure. In this sketch I also planned on doing a detailed face on the female figure
With all this I felt as if it was too cluttered, there was too much going on in the poster and it felt more like a circus poster than a tour poster. |
The second sketch I had gotten the idea to instead of doing a detailed woman of just doing a silhouette. This way I could convey a grim and eerie feeling of an unfinished woman. I also decided to drop the album title and just place tour 2020 instead.
|
My third and last planning sketch was the most simple as I kept looking at the Natalie wood cover and decided what it was missing: the censor bars. This further pushed the eerie feeling but now pushed it more towards the uncomfortable side as now her face and torso and chest would all be covered, what is behind those bars will forever be a mystery.

Process
Process
1.) My first step was to trace my final sketch onto the board that I had. After I had Sketched I moved onto making the two main hues which I will be using for the poster.
2.) After having the hues ready I begin to lay down the appropriate hues to where I wanted them, starting with the border and text which I did in fuchsia. 3.) After laying down the first hue I started to outline the body of the female figure in green. 4.) Then I began to alternate the colors creating a stripped green and fuchsia pattern. 5.) Subsequently, once I had finished the whole alternating colors and creating the pattern I went and did a light pink wash on the female figure. 6.) Before finishing the female figure I went over the stripes again to make sure they stood out. 6.) Then I went on to outline the text in black and also fill in the female figure's hair. 7.) The second to last step was making the female figure more bold so I did a few layers of fuschia. 8.) Finally I placed the black censor boxes on top of her face, chest and torso. |
Experimentation
For my experimentation I wanted to make the text on the poster stand out and be as bold as possible. I decided this because once I was looking at the tour poster Moscoso had made for the miller's blues band I felt like the words blended into the poster too much.
So I began by first laying down a wash of the color I wanted the text to be then went over it in white so that once I placed more fuchsia it would pop out more and make the font appear more full. I did this a total of three times, layering the white and the fuchsia together. By the end it still was not standing out as much as I wanted it to so I ended outlining all the text in black, which did make the text appear more bold. |
Reflection
Critique
Overall, I am very pleased with the final outcome of the tour poster. I love the combination of the colors as well as the pattern and the font of the text.
My goal with this was to try to combine the vibrant and bold hues as well as the aesthetic feel and look of the 60's psychedelic posters while also incorporating aspects from the album art on TV Girl's single. With that goal in mind I think I succeeded, as I was able to take inspiration from the color palette in the single art cover and evoke a similar feeling that the poster Moscoso created for the Millers Blues Band evokes the viewer; I was also able to take inspiration from the art cover with the censor blocks, I chose to place them over the female figures face to represent how in being forced to grow old she became silence and was never allowed to think for her self, she was always restricted. Also placing the censor blocks on her chest and torso to further demonstrate how growing old at a young age made her feel like an object that many could just use.
All in all I was able to create a juxtaposition with the vibrant hues and an attractive woman from the 60s psychedelics' movement while contrasting with the grim and dull topic of being forced to grow old in an abusive industry at the same time period.

ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
Moscosos work heavily uses lines and bright bold hues which transferred over to my piece where bold hues and lined patterns are seen, as for TV girl a limited color palette is being used as well as censor blocks were used in their original artwork which is also seen in my piece.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
That drugs and other psychedelics were a big inspiration in many different art forms and in many different cultures.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea and theme surrounding my piece was the idea of girls being forced to grow old fast and then only being seen as objects that cannot speak for themselves.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
While researching I inferred that Moscoso had a big influence on the psychedelic artwork movement as he has many famous pieces amongst the movement.
